Mappy offers three distinct states during GPS guidance, and the confusion between these states explains most of the voice instruction problems. Understanding which audio channel is actually being used by the application, and how it interacts with the phone’s system settings, allows for resolving the issue in seconds in most cases.
Multimedia audio channel and ringtone volume: the distinction that Mappy does not make obvious
On Android, the physical volume button does not always adjust the same audio channel. Depending on the context (locked screen, ongoing call, open application), it affects the ringtone, notifications, or multimedia stream. Mappy uses the multimedia audio channel to broadcast voice instructions, not the ringtone channel.
Increasing the volume from the home screen often only raises the ringtone. The multimedia channel remains at zero, and the application stays silent during guidance. To fix this, you need to adjust the volume while Mappy is active in navigation mode, or go through the phone’s sound settings and change the “Media” slider separately.
A detailed guide to the complete procedure is available on Système Auto, with steps for each version of Android and iOS.
On iOS, the problem arises differently: the side mute switch cuts off all non-phone audio outputs. The application does not indicate that silent mode is activated, which traps many users.

Mappy speaker icon: three sound modes to differentiate
The speaker icon visible during Mappy guidance toggles between three states. The table below summarizes their behavior.
| Icon | Mode | What you hear |
|---|---|---|
| Speaker with a line through it | Sound off | No sound, neither voice nor alert |
| Speaker with an exclamation mark | Alerts only | Alert signals (radar, incident) without direction instructions |
| Simple speaker | Full sound | Voice guidance instructions and alerts |
The “alerts only” mode is often mistakenly selected. The user occasionally hears a beep and assumes that voice guidance is working, while direction instructions remain disabled. You need to tap the icon until the speaker without any additional symbol is displayed to get full guidance.
Absent or incorrect TTS voice: a silent block
Mappy delegates voice synthesis to the TTS (Text-to-Speech) engine of the operating system. The application does not contain its own guidance voice. If no TTS voice is installed on the phone, or if the installed voice is in another language, guidance remains completely silent even with the volume at maximum.
This feature distinguishes Mappy from several competitors that include their own voice files. The official Mappy support recommends checking for the presence of a French TTS voice and, if necessary, downloading the French TTS voice from Google in the phone settings.
Checking on Android
- Open Settings, then System, then Language & input, then Text-to-speech output
- Check that the selected engine (Google TTS or Samsung TTS) has a French voice installed
- Run a playback test to confirm that the voice works outside of Mappy
Checking on iOS
- Open Settings, then General, then Accessibility, then VoiceOver, then Speech
- Check that the default dialect is set to French (France)
- If the French voice does not appear, download it from this same menu before restarting Mappy
Changing the guidance voice (male, female, speed) is done exclusively in the system settings and not in the Mappy application itself. This is a point that generates confusion, as other GPS applications like Waze or Google Maps offer this setting directly in their internal settings.

Do Not Disturb mode and permissions: the forgotten culprits
A properly set volume, an installed TTS voice, and the speaker icon in full mode are not always enough. The “Do Not Disturb” mode can selectively mute navigation sounds without the user being informed by the application.
On both Android and iOS, this mode filters notifications and, depending on the chosen configuration, also blocks audio outputs from third-party applications. Mappy does not display any warning when this mode is active.
Application permissions also play a role. On some versions of Android, a background restriction may prevent Mappy from producing sound when the screen is off. Check in Settings, then Apps, then Mappy, that the application has permission to run in the background without battery restrictions.
Bluetooth and CarPlay connection: sound redirected elsewhere
When the phone is connected via Bluetooth to the car radio or through CarPlay, Mappy’s audio stream is redirected to the vehicle’s system. If the car radio is off, on another source (FM radio, CD), or if the volume of the Bluetooth source is at zero on the vehicle side, voice instructions are issued but remain inaudible in the cabin.
The solution is to ensure that the vehicle’s audio source is correctly set to the Bluetooth or CarPlay input, and that the volume is turned up on the car radio (not just on the phone). If in doubt, temporarily disconnecting Bluetooth forces Mappy to use the phone’s speaker, which allows confirming that voice guidance is working.
The audio redirection issue affects all navigation applications, but Mappy does not offer an internal setting to force output to the phone’s speaker when a Bluetooth connection is active. This lack of control explains a significant portion of user reports describing a “silent” GPS when the sound is simply being sent to the wrong device.
